Ocean Discovery Institute piloted a citizen science model to engage an urban and diverse community to take a leadership role in understanding the science in their backyards. The pilot explored the integration of: 1) leaders that reflect the community, 2) relevant science to the participants’ lives, 3) guided experiences, 4) scientist interactions, 5) design that removes unique barriers. Participants conducted research to understand sources of plastic trash within their local, urban canyons; providing a link for participants between daily choices to inspire stewardship. We will share the innovative model, lessons learned and results to date, and the challenges still underway.
