Using anchoring phenomenon to improve student understanding of chemistry concepts within NGSS

This session will focus on how we have transformed our chemistry classrooms using an overarching event to continuously check-in on student understanding throughout a unit. We will bring in examples from our experiences such as water striders to understand intermolecular forces (NGSS P.E. HS-PS1-3) and neonatal incubators to understand thermochemistry (NGSS P.E. HS-PS3-2, 3-3, 3-4). Part of this session will include time for teachers to brainstorm additional anchoring events that will be useful in chemistry units. Teachers will come away with a better understanding of how to plan and implement NGSS 3-D (DCI, CCC, SEP) units.
